Google Plus – Does it add up?

google plus

In a word, yes.

Google Plus is much more than just another social network. Especially if you want to use it to help market your business on the web. Lets take a look at why.

Google owns it.

Google has the #1 search engine in the world, and Google Plus is it’s social media product. This means that content shared on Google Plus is going to get indexed extremely fast by their search engine.

This also means that by linking to your websites content in your Google Plus posts, that content will show up in their SERPs faster. So using Google Plus to share your content and engage potential customers will have the added benefit of helping your SEO strategy.

Google Plus profiles can also be used for your websites SEO.

They are one of the few social networks that allow dofollow links in your profile. This means that you can create backlinks, with specific anchor text, to your website that will pass on page rank.

Each time you +1 or share a post a link is created back to your profile. This also happens when someone else mentions you in their posts. All of these links pass link juice to your profile which helps it have a higher page rank. The higher your profiles page rank, the more link juice that will be passed on to your website through the backlinks in your profile.

You can claim authorship for content.

Author rank is a very interesting concept that Google has implemented. By linking your Google Plus account with content you have created, you can build your authorship ranking. This will help your content rank higher in search. It will also identify you (with your profile pic) in search results, which increases click through rates.

The use of author information is going to be big in my opinion. By giving authors a way to claim content they are making it easier for people to find that content. Especially when you add in the social component of Google Plus.

Look at it this way, a follower of yours is searching for info on a topic you blog on regularly. If they are signed into Google Plus then their personalized results will rank your content higher (since they have you in their circles), and they will see your picture next to the results.

Because of this, they are much more likely to click through and read your article. If they like it they will probably +1 and share it, which will allow all of the people in their circles to see it. In this way a good article can quickly go viral, which of course will only push it up further in Google’s SERPs.

Establish your brand’s presence early.

Whether it is your personal brand or business brand, establishing a presence on Google Plus is a great idea. The latest stats show that it has almost as many users as Twitter already. This number is growing daily, so why wait?

  • Add links to your G+ profile on your website to make it easy for people to circle you
  • Circle others
  • Create a specific circle of authority users and share it
